Writer Henry Miller moved to Big Sur in 1940 after several years in France.  His ‘Tropics’ books were published in France while he lived in Big Sur but were banned in the United States.

The books slowly gained a cult following Europe and, as people begain smuggling them into the United States, they began to be read among the literati and ended up influencing the burgeoning Beat Generation of writers like Jack Kerouac and .
